The NYC Power Authority, Con Edison, utilizes CHR Heating Jackets to withstand the cold of liquid nitrogen (-320F). Pictured are High Voltage Feeder Cables filled with a dialectic fluid. They must remain frozen to create an “ice plug” – this enable the pipe to be cut open so necessary repairs can be performed. The outer most Heating Jacket in the photo is being used to keep the frost level to a manageable level. Without this Frost Reducing Jacket the work area would become virtually filled with ice. Once the repairs are complete, which can take up to a month, the inner Heating Jacket is then energized. Once this Thawing Jacket is powered up, it quickly melts the ice plug inside the pipe so power can be turned back on through the repaired cables.

SEAKEEPER – GYROSCOPE
Seakeeper Inc manufactures 25″ gyroscopes that install in yachts to prevent them from rolling in the waves. Since the gyro functions under a vacuum condition it was necessary to “out-gas” the aluminum by raising it’s temperature prior to installation. The cooling fins on the sphere surface made the project a bit more complex, but the heater was designed to mate with the fins and now fits like a glove. This custom design was engineered and delivered in less than 30 days and an integral part of Seakeeper’s manufacturing process.

SPECIAL METALS INC.
Special Metals Inc. uses ceramic crucibles to work with high-purity super alloys and other powders. To maintain the purity of the material the ceramic crucibles need to be heated and out-gassed prior to being put into service. This “inside out” heater has the insulation inside and the exterior heated. Built to fit, thermally efficient, rugged and with accurate temperature control this system cost a fraction of what an oven would have cost.
