Freeze Prevention
The NYC Power Authority, Con Edison, utilizes CHR Heating Jackets to withstand the cold of liquid nitrogen (-320F). Pictured are High Voltage Feeder Cables filled with a dialectic fluid. They must remain frozen to create an “ice plug” – this enable the pipe to be cut open so necessary repairs can be performed. The outer most Heating Jacket in the photo is being used to keep the frost level to a manageable level. Without this Frost Reducing Jacket the work area would become virtually filled with ice. Once the repairs are complete, which can take up to a month, the inner Heating Jacket is then energized. Once this Thawing Jacket is powered up, it quickly melts the ice plug inside the pipe so power can be turned back on through the repaired cables.
